   Joe died August 16, 2024 in Windham New Hampshire, USA. Joe was the husband of Deborah and father to Sarah and Joey. Joe was born in North Andover and as a young man he excelled in baseball, football, and wrestling. Joe attended the MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in earth and planetary science, majoring in meteorology.

   After graduating from MIT, Joe began specializing in air pollution, in particular model development. key contributions included the Buoyant Line Plume Model, CALPUFF and CALMET as well as BPIP and BPIP Prime models. These models are widely used by researchers, environmental consultants, and regulatory agencies (including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) globally. He took great pride in teaching and mentorship.

   In June this year, Mr Antonsson and his collaborators dropped a bombshell on the waterline of the standard governing dynamic olfactometry with the publication of their scientific paper published in Atmospheric Environment. The EN 13725 standard assumes that assessors' sensitivity to 1-butanol is transferable to other odours. However, the study reveals that this sensitivity transfer is not valid for other odorous substances, calling into question the uniform application of the standard.

   You may imagine how much debate this research has generated. We have participated in threads and threads of conversations with several world experts in odour management, commenting on the results of the following paper. The paper analyses the reproducibility of odour testing using the EN 13725 standard. The study focuses on the variability of results between different laboratories and how the selection of assessors and the number of repetitions influence that variability. These are some of the four key findings of the paper.

   Last week, the 27th CASANZ International Clean Air and Environment Conference, held alongside the 10th Odours and Air Emissions Conference, concluded successfully.    The 2024 CASANZ International Clean Air and Environment Conference and the 10th Odours and Air Emissions Conference featured a comprehensive agenda spanning several days, including a variety of sessions, workshops, and keynotes that covered the latest advancements in air quality and odour management.

With a distinguished career and deep knowledge of the market for environmental monitoring systems, Johnson has been instrumental in the growth and success of the company. His expertise and leadership have helped establish South Coast Science as a benchmark in the industry, particularly noted for the reliability and precision of its products.

   Carlos Nietzsche Diaz Jimenez, the CEO of Ambiente et Odora SL and editor-in-chief of this website, has been honoured with the Air Quality Champion award for his exceptional advocacy, education, and contributions in the field of odour management and air quality since 2001. His dedication is evident in his participation in over 90 international conferences on odour management and his ongoing contributions to numerous publications. His team has also organised several international conferences and courses, actively promoting the advancement and awareness of odour science on a global scale.

   Carlos has led odour management projects in many countries around the world and has been a keynote speaker at various international conferences, showcasing his expertise and commitment to the field. His role as the former president of the International Environmental Society of Odour Managers and his membership in several committees dealing with odour management, such as those of the IWA, WEF, AMIGO, and CEN, underscore his dedication to improving air quality standards worldwide.
