A new proposal for a European Norm about electronic air monitoring of odorants with the so-called electronic noses (or e-noses) have been recently filled. The 18th of December, the European Committee for Standardization sent a letter to all the people involved in the Technical Committee dealing with Air Quality to comment on the adoption of a proposal with the tentative name "prEN xxxxx Air quality – Continuous instrumental odorant monitoring in air to assess risks of odour (nuisance) and safety".
This new work item proposal "Electronic nose" will be based on the Dutch Norm NTA 9055:2012 Air quality - Electronic air monitoring - Odour (nuisance) and safety (Luchtkwaliteit - Elektronische luchtmonitoring - Geur(overlast) en veiligheid).
The proposed European Standard applies to the use of e-nose technology for continuous monitoring and detecting of changes in the composition of ambient air by gaseous emissions that could pose a risk of causing odour nuisance and safety risks. An e-nose can give an impression of a gas mixture, just like the human nose can for an odour mixture. The e-nose shall be calibrated for this purpose (training). An e-nose will never equal the human nose and conventional gas detection equipment, but it may supplement sensory odour perception and conventional gas detection techniques.
All members of Technical Committee dealing with Air Quality have been asked to inform to the Secretariat whether they agree to the adoption of this preliminary work item by making use of the CEN eBalloting portal (Committee Internal Balloting).
Deadline for voting will be the 19th of March 2015.
