The Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation (AEAS) agreed in 2018 to create a specific sub-group dedicated to odour management (SGO) within the Operations, Technology and Energy group of AEAS. Five years later, AEAS has elevated the status of the SGO to become a fully-fledged group. This is fantastic news for any odour manager interested in this sector.
On Wednesday 11th May, the plenary meeting of the Commission V of the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation (AEAS) took place. At this meeting, it was decided that the Odour Management Subgroup would become the Odour Management Group (GGO), no longer under the umbrella of the Operations, Technology and Energy Group. This decision adds more weight and responsibility to the group of people working on various odour management projects.
The GGO will be led by Mr. Asier López Etxebarria, Deputy Director of Sanitation Operations at the Galindo WWTP of the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao-Bizkaia. This group addresses the current need to consider the management of air lines within WWTPs, although it will not focus solely on this aspect, but will also cover other issues such as the odour impact across the entire infrastructure, including sanitation networks, pumping stations, storm tanks, etc.
One of the tasks of the GGO is to develop a position paper on odour management. To do this, the group has built upon a similar initiative developed by the WEF and has created a survey to understand the cost of odour management in sanitation systems serving more than 10,000 p.e. in Spain. The aim of this initiative is to properly assess the economic cost of air lines in WWTPs.
The final report of this work is expected to be ready by this summer. However, preliminary results have already been presented in 2022 in Córdoba at the AEAS conference, and more recently at the Water Environment Federation (WEF) conference held three weeks ago in Charlotte (USA), and also online at this webinar organised by the International Odour Management Association, which is available for free.
