The industrial activity of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) can be potentially odorous, causing important nuisances to the population living in the surroundings. Modern facilities are designed in order to avoid these problems, considering, for example, enclosed sources.

This study describes the odour and compounds formation in different industry sectors. Exposes methods for odour characterization and impact assessment, recommending dynamic olfactometry according to EN-13725 combined with high resolution chemical analysis, dispersion modelling or direct exposure measurements by field inspections (VDI3940).
The present work is a joint venture project conducted by the Uruguayan Technological Laboratory (LATU), the National Directorate of the Environment (DINAMA) and the Río Negro’s local government. It consists on the application of different methodologies to address the problem generated by the presence of unpleasant odours in Fray Bentos, Uruguay.
