Neutralizing Odors in Industry to Be a Good Neighbor

In Chile, offensive odors from industrial, agricultural, and urban sources have long affected quality of life, leading to new regulations after the emblematic 2012 Freirina case.

This study tests the effectiveness of Ecosorb odor neutralizer in two Chilean companies by monitoring community complaints. Results suggest that using odor neutralizers can help any company reduce complaints and build better relationships with neighboring communities.

Abstract

In Chile, unpleasant odors generated by industrial, agricultural, and urban activities have been a source of concern for years, significantly affecting the quality of life and health of communities near the sources of emission. The emblematic case of the “Pig Farm in the commune of Freirina” in 2012 marked a turning point, leading to the creation of the first Odor Management Strategy in 2014, as well as regulations in sectors such as pork production, with the aim of mitigating odors and promoting a positive relationship between companies, workers, communities, and authorities.

The objective of this study is to test the effectiveness of the Ecosorb odor neutralizer in reducing complaints about unpleasant odors in two Chilean industrial companies from different sectors, while maintaining their anonymity.

The methodology used involves a comparative analysis over a defined period in two companies from different sectors, aiming to demonstrate through these case studies the impact of using a neutralizer to mitigate odor and its direct effect on community complaints.

This leads us to determine that the study is replicable to establish whether a company—regardless of the sector—if addressing odors by applying a neutralizer, can become a good neighbor within the community.
