The 7th Conference of the International Water Association just took place in Warsaw and now it is time for packing up, enhance the network of contacts with new colleagues and do some rethinking considering the trends seen in this event. Over 100 people from all over the world met at the Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer Management of the Warsaw University of Technology to discuss about odour management.
The organization had less than a year to organize a conference. The decision about where to organize the IWA conference was taken during the last NOSE, so that left little time to organize things like calling a scientific committee, reviewing papers, sending them back to authors and asking for the versions corrected, booking a room, dinner, asking for chairs, etc. There is little to blame to the organizers taking into account the short notice time given to set up this event.
One more year the people of Olfasense is organizing a Technical Training day. These successful Olfasense Workshops on Product and Material Testing and the Technical Training days have being going on for a few years as a way to introduce new advances and technologies available for a better estimation of the odour emission. This year, the editor of this website has been invited to a present the state of the revision of the EN 13725.
On a yearly basis, Olfasense organizes these events in order to both discuss the state of the technology, and to have a practical hands on session on equipment and methods. This time the Odour Workshop on P&M Testing is planned for the 17th of January 2018 and the Technical Training Day is scheduled for the following day, 18th of January 2018. The editor of this website has been invited to present the last advances of the Working Group 2 of the Technical Committee 264 'Air quality - Determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry'.
Russellville is the county seat and largest city in Pope County, Arkansas, United States, and has a population of 27,920. It is home to Arkansas Tech University and Arkansas Nuclear One, Arkansas' only nuclear power plant. It is also home to a 36-acre animal byproduct rendering plant that has been operating since the 1950s under various owners. For DECADES, Russellville citizens have been suffering a significant odour impact from this facility. Russellville City Council asked for help to the EPA, but the reply of the EPA was: "we are dealing with pollutants no with odours".
In 2015, the city council of Russellville tired of not finding solutions to the significant odour impact of this plant decided to pass an ordinance about odour control. Unfortunately, this text did not change things much, so a couple of years later, another odour ordinance was passed. This second ordinance had a chapter authorising violators to be fined.

A few days ago we learnt about a byproduct rendering plant that has been operating for decades with significant odour complaints in the town of Russellville. The owners mentioned that they "invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in mechanical upgrades to the plant and on consultants whose speciality is odour control." This is a very fair amount of money to be spent on odour control. However, we wanted to make a small exercise: How much is the odour impact costing to Russellsille citicens?
