Odourmap, an online platform for odour complaint management, odour monitoring and community communication
In response to odour regulation for solid waste management installations in France a web based tool, called Odourmap, was developed by Odournet to monitor odour impacts using volunteer community field panels, spontaneous resident observations and professional panels.
This approach is actually (year 2012) being applied at a waste management facility in Angers, France, providing close monitoring of the odour impact. Odourmap allows online recording and displaying of complaints and observations from residents and/or professional panels.

Abstract
In response to odour regulation for solid waste management installations in France a web based tool, called Odourmap, was developed by Odournet to monitor odour impacts using volunteer community field panels, spontaneous resident observations and professional panels. This approach is actually (year 2012) being applied at a waste management facility in Angers, France, providing close monitoring of the odour impact. Odourmap allows online recording and displaying of complaints and observations from residents and/or professional panels. Besides, also includes online display of other parameters (weather forecast or real data, impacts based on dispersion modelling, monitoring data from electronic noses, sonometers, production data, etc.). Odourmap combines all these information channels in one Google Maps based display, which allows the user navigating via a customizable timeline and assess both the current and future situations. Historical data (emissions, impacts, complaints, etc.) can be displayed for specific moments or selected periods. Furthermore, these results can be shown as an animated progression, or through statistical views (e.g. pie charts). In the current Angers situation, the impact of the waste management facility is not causing significant community annoyance. The tool is designed to be effective in providing transparency and managed communication in conflictive situations, allowing direct interaction between citizens, administrators and plant operators, with the aim to de-escalate community conflicts and implement effective fact based odour impact management policies.
