Olores.org had the pleasure of organizing the 11th meeting of the Working Group (WG) 2 of the Technical Committee 264 of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This group has the task of reviewing and updating the aged European Standard EN 13725 that deals with the determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry and odour emission rate from stationary sources.

This meeting took place in the city of Bilbao, Spain a day after the meeting of the WG41. This time the working documents focused on two of the juiciest part of the standard: Sampling and uncertainty. In the previous meeting in Delft. some aspects were commented but there is still further work ahead on these issues.

The draft of the EN 13725 was reviewed in the section of sampling. This part has been led by Mr. de Bree who has a wide experience in sampling odours for many years with his Dutch company Buroblauw. The sampling part is taking into account some normative documents on sampling such as the German standard VDI 3880 or the ISO 16911, EN 15259, CEN/TS 15675 and CEN/TS 15674, among others. Here you have an interesting presentation of Mr. Frechen on the subject. Unfortunately, the discussion about the results of the proficiency test in Kassel was postponed to a following meeting, but still some other interesting approaches on sampling odours were discussed

A paper on field blanks presented in the last NOSE2016 by Mr. Ogink from the Wageningen University and Research centre was commented. The WG2 agreed not to prescribe field blanks but to make the user of the standard aware of the risk of residual odour and how to carry out a blank test if required to verify the odour free status of the equipment. Mr Rossi from the Italian company Progress srl is writing this part addressing some common issues on field sampling.

Some other discussions dealt with passive area source sampling hoods. In this case the approach finally decided, after many discussions on the subject, is to avoid the definition of a geometry and flow of a certain device as it happens for example in the German Standard VDI 3880 and to set a benchmark mass transfer value for a defined compound such as for example acetone in water. Ms Capelly from the University of Politecnico Milano will prepare a draft on this subject. Some other important issues were discussed here, but again, it is not the aim of this publication to inform about every single detail of this norm.

If you want to know more and have access to the documents of this WG2. there is always a place here for any person interested on this subject. Feel free to contact your national standardization body in the case of CEN members to get in touch with this group. Even if you are not European, you can have access to all the documentation published in this group, provided that your country has an organization member of the ISO. Just contact your national representative body.

Some aspects of the uncertainty calculation were discussed. An introduction on uncertainty in olfactometry was presented an the management of representative panels, for determining bias and other uncertainty components were commented. The term ‘intermediate measurement precision’ was included and on the other hand the term intra lab reproducibility was excluded. Some wording was discussed, such as the use of  ‘replicates’ vs ‘identical samples’. In addition there were some discussions on the time frame of executing measurements for uncertainty calculations, as the current version allows a rolling time frame approach.

Olores.org would like to thank to all the participants for attending this meeting. Also we would like to say thanks to the local government of Bilbao for offering their meeting room in the Auzo Factory - Irazabal Matiko. We really enjoyed their meeting room and their two beautiful terraces.

The next meeting will take place in Barcelona, Spain the 14th and 15th of February 2017.
