The present work is a joint venture project conducted by the Uruguayan Technological Laboratory (LATU), the National Directorate of the Environment (DINAMA) and the Río Negro’s local government. It consists on the application of different methodologies to address the problem generated by the presence of unpleasant odours in Fray Bentos, Uruguay.

Abstract
The present work is a joint venture project conducted by the Uruguayan Technological Laboratory (LATU), the National Directorate of the Environment (DINAMA) and the Río Negro’s local government. It consists on the application of different methodologies to address the problem generated by the presence of unpleasant odours in Fray Bentos, Uruguay.
Several sources were identified as potential odour emitters and consequently as eventual generators of odour events reported by local people. The study was carried out through the following methodologies: a local population panel, whose members register the daily odour sensations; field investigation performed by groups of trained panelists; dynamic olfatometry to determine the odour emission level from previously identified sources in the area; and the AERMOD model to predict the odour dispersion.
The results are expected to be complementary and they should provide a better understanding of the odour events that periodically affect the city, in order to help decision makers in formulating strategies to mitigate the problem. The current job, first-of-its-kind in Uruguay, will build national capacities to develop similar studies in other parts of the country.
