Highlights from the 2024 CASANZ and IWA Clean Air Conference

   Last week, the 27th CASANZ International Clean Air and Environment Conference, held alongside the 10th Odours and Air Emissions Conference, concluded successfully. Organised by the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ) in collaboration with the International Water Association (IWA), the event featured over 110 presentations covering a wide range of topics in air quality and odour management through parallel sessions.

   The 2024 CASANZ International Clean Air and Environment Conference and the 10th Odours and Air Emissions Conference featured a comprehensive agenda spanning several days, including a variety of sessions, workshops, and keynotes that covered the latest advancements in air quality and odour management.

   The first day began with conference registration, followed by a series of insightful sessions and workshops.

   Highlights included a presentation on the "International Modelling Handbook" by Jenny Barclay and a virtual discussion led by Michael McGinley on the differences between olfactometry practices in Europe, America, and their relevance to Australia and New Zealand. Attendees also participated in a detailed workshop on field odour measurements presented by the editor of this website, which provided a comprehensive overview of the current state of odour sensing technology in Europe and its potential applications in Australia and NZ.

   The day concluded with a Welcome Reception at the Exhibition Hall, where guests were greeted by the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Hobart, Councillor Anna Reynolds, and Wes Ford, Director and CEO of the Environment Protection Authority of Tasmania.

   The second day began with a formal opening by Her Excellency, the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania, followed by a series of welcome addresses from key figures including Hon. Minister Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables. Two keynote speakers presented on critical topics: Dr. Carolyn Orr discussed the health benefits of a greener, cleaner world, while Matthew Riley addressed the integration of air quality services through modelling and data analysis.

   Throughout the day, concurrent sessions covered themes such as odour assessment, measurement methodologies, and odour management in specific industries.

   The third day continued with multiple concurrent sessions. Presenters covered community odour perception, sensory evaluation, and odour dispersion modelling.

   The day ended with a Gala Dinner and Awards Evening at the Wrest Point Casino, providing a networking opportunity for attendees and a celebration of achievements within the odour management field.

   The final day included a site tour to various locations, including the Skretting facility and the Blackmans Bay Water Treatment Plant, allowing participants to observe real-world applications of odour and air quality management strategies.

   This year’s conference showcased a wide range of topics and innovative approaches to odour and air quality management, making it a valuable event for professionals in the field.

   One of the keynote speakers was Carlos Nietzsche Diaz Jimenez, CEO of Ambiente et Odora SL and Chief Editor of this website. His presentation, "Changes in European Legislation and the Consideration of Odour Impacts and Health," explored recent changes in European regulations and their implications for odour management practices worldwide. Carlos provided insights into how these legislative developments are shaping approaches to odour management.

   The conference was well-received, with diverse participation from professionals and experts worldwide. It provided a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, discussing new developments, and fostering cooperation in the ongoing effort to improve air quality.
