Coexistence between a Sewage Plant and its Surrounding. Redesigning Galindo WWTP
Galindo waste water treatment plant was designed in the 1980s on the plot of a dump in a highly industrialized area. The industrial conversion plan and urban development have remodeled the surrounding landscape, making it an urban established plant, causing conditions to which the plant could not offer solutions.
Aware that the plant should not produce a significant change in the quality of resident’s life, the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia (CABB) has designed an ambitious plan of minimization of the odor significance, scheduled in four stages.

Abstract
Galindo waste water treatment plant was designed in the 1980s on the plot of a dump in a highly industrialized area. The industrial conversion plan and urban development have remodeled the surrounding landscape, making it an urban established plant, causing conditions to which the plant could not offer solutions. Aware that the plant should not produce a significant change in the quality of resident’s life, the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia (CABB) has designed an ambitious plan of minimization of the odor significance. Scheduled in four stages, the plan takes into account the performance in the sludge treatment area, already completed, as well as the primary settlement and pretreatment process. This cycle shall be completed with the covering of biological reactors, which will simultaneously respond to an old social demand, due to the high visual impact from the town of Sestao. Dynamic olfactometry techniques have been used to prioritize and define the scope, as well as chemical analysis to select deodorization systems to install. Computational fluid dynamics and summer/winter regulation - depending on the odor emission - enable the energetic improvement of the building air circulation. The confinement of odor sources has required substantial changes in the civil installation, looking for imaginative solutions that solve the needs inherent to its operation and maintenance, while ensuring operational safety. The final experience reveals the well-known need to implement these type of solutions during previous plant designing, in order to avoid further modifications, which are always more complex and with higher cost.
